AFL Team - Dubai Dingoes Sports Club Posted Date : 10/18/2010

Dubai Dingoes (Dubai, UAE)

Dubai Dingoes are now the Dubai dingoes Sports Club and our email address is

The Dubai Dingoes Sports Club is the oldest established Australian sporting association in Dubai.  Our aim is to promote Australian sports and culture in the Gulf and establish a sense of community among the expatriate population.

Our club was initially established in 2006, as the first Australian Rules football team in the Middle East and then hosted the first ever Aussie Rule tournament – ‘The Dubai 9’s’.

In 2008/2009 we joined the newly established AFL Middle East League, which is fully endorsed by the AFL in Melbourne. The league now has teams from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain.

Our teams also participate in various international tournaments including the ANZAC Cup, the Bali Masters which attracts Aussie rules players from around the globe.

We envisage the club continuing its growth to become the number one Australian Sports and Social Club in Dubai.
We are always keen to meet potential players, social members or sponsors and look forward to seeing you at the games.

Player to watch: All of us – sometimes we are great.

AFL Team - Dubai Dragons Posted Date : 10/18/2010

Dubai Dragons

The Dubai Dragons are Dubai's newest team and have built a great player list since finishing runners up in the Dubai 9's in their inaugural year in 2008. The team is largely made up of expatriate Aussie professionals who want to have a kick in a relaxed environment. Training at Safa Park just inside Gate 2 each Saturday at 9.30am and on the rugby pitch under lights inside Safa Park Gate 1 on Tuesdays from 6.45pm new recruits are always welcome. The Club hosts a range of socials events after each game and throughout the year for players and their families. This kicked off with a great Grand Final Day at Emirates GC with over 100 guests and will this year include a day at the races, a polo event and other events tbc. With 26 regulars at training the competition for spots is bringing out the best in everyone and we are looking forward to adding some silverware to the trophy cabinet this year.

AFL Team - Doha Kangaroos Posted Date : 10/18/2010

The Doha Kangaroos were initially formed to compete in the Dubai 9s. Gary Johnson, one of the club’s founding members was put in contact with other Australian expatriates in Qatar through Nigel Koch, a major player behind the Dingoes and 9s.
One of those people was Billy Barker who is affiliated with the Singapore Wombats and was somewhat familiar with setting up a club. From there they sought expressions of interest from parties at the Australian New Zealand Business in Qatar (ANZBIQ) function and three days later, around 10 Aussies showed up at the Legends Bar at Rydges Plaza and the club was born.
The Doha Kangaroos entered the Dubai 9s in 2007 and came a credible 3rd after only a few weeks of training. There is a great Aussie Rules passion amongst the Doha community however it spreads beyond the Australians, with other expats being involved such as Irish, NZ and USA. With the region growing the Doha Kangaroos want to build a legacy for other joining the community.

AFL Team - Muscat Magpies Posted Date : 10/18/2010

Muscat Magpies (Muscat, Oman)

The club has its origins in the Clann na hOman Gaelic Football team which was founded in March 2003. The founding of the club was a coordinated affair between Colin Butler and the Irish Society President Mrs Terri Johar (who is also Honorary Club President).   The first 6 months consisted of driving for 1 hour to play / train on the lawn of the Al Sawadi hotel half way between Sohar & Muscat.  Soon after the base was shifted to the Muscat Rugby Club (which was then a sand pitch).  Numbers grew gradually to a dozen or so - most were non Irish, Aussies, English, Welsh, Scottish, Romanians.  Steve O'Connor was a driving force through these years, serving as Chairman of the club until his departure to Bahrain in early 2008.   Tom English and Aaron Henderson rounded off the main committee / coaching staff in the early days.
Muscat began entering a team in the Aussie Rules 9’s tournament in Dubai in 2007, and from 2008 the Australian game began to grow in popularity and evolved into a new playing arm of the club - The Muscat Magpies.  The Magpies won their first game of Aussie Rules on Omani soil in December 2007 defeating the Dubai Dingoes in the inaugural O'Connor Cup.  The Magpies lined up in the new AFL Middle East competition in 2008/9.  In a great first year the team completed a 5 win / 1 loss home and away season and played off in the inaugural AFL ME Grand Final against competition yardstick the Dubai Heat, who beat us by 8 points to win the flag.

AFL Team - Bahrain Blues Posted Date : 10/18/2010
Bahrain Blues (Bahrain)

The Bahrain Football Club, known more recently as the Bahrain Blues, have blossomed from humble beginnings to the 'new kids on the block' in the AFL Middle East competition. Following more than a year of lobbying from enthusiastic would-be players and administrators lead by Tim Barret, the team has found it's way to the top league in the Gulf Region. Players have emerged from a variety of backgrounds including soccer, rugby union, rugby league, gaelic football and hockey to form the nucleus of this group. Keen interest and consistently good training numbers demonstrate a commitment to the sport and the team for years to come. The recently secured sponsorship of Bahrain Duty Free, the support of the Bahrain Rugby Football Club, our home ground sponsor, and the support of the Arabian Celts Gaelic football team in training and practice matches contribute significantly to the dream becoming reality for the Bahrain Blues. Although a small and somewhat modest squad, the Blues boast the inclusion of home grown stars, and to name a few we have Stewart ‘Budge’ Beechey from Hobart in Tassie, Adam ‘Trigger’ Trzesinski from Adelaide, Carlo ‘Breezer’ Calabrese and Damien ‘Dogger’ Sheehan from the Norwood Club in South Australia. We are legends in our own lunch time. Look out for the Bahrain Blues – could be a surprise packet in the inaugural, and if not, we’ll have a bloody good time trying.
