Middle East and Gulf Australian Alumni (MEGAA)

Are you an Australian graduate living or working in the Middle East?   MEGAA members are of various nationalities working in different sectors but have all graduated from Australian universities and are residing and/or working in the United Arab Emirates.

The purpose of the Alumni network is to encourage graduates to stay in touch with the Australian university environment and keep abreast of education opportunities in Australia either for themselves or for friends and family.  An Alumni community in the region will help students feel that the relationship with Australia does not end once they graduate and return to their home country.  The network also hopes to provide members with employment opportunities in the region, invitations to high profile Government events, social get-togethers, MEGAA newsletters and plenty more!

MEGAA members can provide support and mentoring for prospective students, who are interested in exploring study opportunities in Australia, establish partnerships with local employers to help link graduates of Australian institutions with job opportunities in their local countries, and assist in building stronger bilateral business, cultural and trade relationships between Australia and the Middle East.

MEGAA is also developing an exciting and interactive website with loads of information about social events, contacts, employment opportunities and even a photo gallery!  The website also features an Alumni blog or discussion forum that is exclusively for MEGAA members!  For a sneak preview of the MEGAA website click on this link.

Australians Marrying in the UAE

For a non-Muslim to marry, one person (either bride or groom) must hold a valid residents visa and the ceremony would be held in a church.   There is no civil ceremony available in the UAE and as you are aware marriages are not conducted in Australian missions overseas.

The marriage ceremony may take place either in a church (if you are a member of the congregation) or at an alternative venue eg private home (this option is available only for certain religious denominations - They need to consult the relevant minister - they need to check with the church for the minister.

Also they need the following:

• A Certificate of No Impediment is generally required.

• If divorcees, copies of Decree Absolutes are needed.

• Bride & groom’s passports

• Two witnesses may be required to attend the ceremony.

• Once the marriage certificate is signed, the document will need to be attested by the UAE Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

If you can contribute - send mail to webmaster@anzauae.org and I'll add your link to this page.
